Why cloth masks must be required in public to help contain COVID-19, save lives, and end lockdowns#Masks4All

88% of the global population lives in countries that recommend or require masks because they’re proven to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Yet many countries (including the U.S.) haven’t mandated public mask usage and thus aren’t using one of the most proven and effective containment strategies.

1. The experts almost universally agree that masks limit the spread of COVID-19 and save lives

The U.S. “CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings” because “a significant portion of individuals with coronavirus lack symptoms” and they can be contagious spreaders of the virus.

“The big mistake in the U.S. and Europe, in my opinion, is that people aren’t wearing masks.” –China’s CDC Director

The effectiveness of public mask usage has also been endorsed by:
The leading disease experts and governments representing 88% of the world’s population (including China, Japan, Germany, France, India, Brazil, and Russia)
-The 65+ countries that have made masks mandatory countrywide
Dr. Anthony Faucithe United States’ leading expert on infectious diseases
Dr. Francis S. Collins, the Director of The U.S. NIH (the agency of the U.S. government responsible for biomedical and public health research)

There are “34 scientific papers indicating basic masks can be effective in reducing virus transmission in public — and not a single paper that shows clear evidence that they cannot.” –The Washington Post

Note: There are a limited number of countries that have yet to recommend public mask usage. You can read about the major flaw in their viewpoint here.

2. Anyone not wearing a cloth mask in public puts you and your family at risk and increases the chances of a second lockdown

Why? Because wearing a mask reduces the chances of spreading COVID-19 from you to others.

We now know that ~25-50% of people with COVID-19 are asymptomatic, that you don’t need to be symptomatic to be contagious, and that a primary route of transmission is likely via small droplets that are ejected when speaking, coughing or sneezing.

So when we both wear face masks, my mask protects you, and your mask protects me.

By not using one of the most proven and effective ways to limit COVID-19 spread, we are significantly increasing the chances of a second lockdown which would be devastating to our economy.

3. What are the flagship COVID-19 containment countries saying about the effectiveness of masks?

“The big mistake in the U.S. and Europe, in my opinion, is that people aren’t wearing masks.” –China’s CDC Director

Most country responses to COVID-19 have been modeled off of South Korea, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, and Germany because they’ve been able to contain the spread of the virus.

And while all five places are lauded for their robust test & trace programs (a critically important containment strategy), what is frequently overlooked by policymakers and reporters is that they all have universal mask usage (close to 100% of citizens wear masks).

“In Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam, wearing masks in public is so widely accepted that those who leave home barefaced risk dirty looks or being told off.” –South China Morning Post

The fact that the flagship COVID-19 containment countries all have universal mask usage and that they view this as a critical component of their containment strategy cannot be ignored.

4. The scientific research that has caused 65+ countries and 10+ U.S. States to make masks mandatory

An international cross-disciplinary review of the scientific research by 19 experts (from Stanford, MIT, Oxford, UPenn, Brown, UNC, UCLA, and USF) concluded that:

  • Non-medical cloth masks have been effective in reducing the spread of coronavirus because they block a high portion of the droplets coming from someone’s mouth and nose
  • Near-universal adoption of non-medical masks in public, in conjunction with other measures could effectively stop the community spread of the virus (by reducing effective-R to below 1.0). Other measures include widespread testing & tracing, social distancing, and hand washing.
  • Laws appear to be highly effective at increasing compliance and slowing or stopping the spread of COVID-19.
  • While researchers may reasonably disagree on the magnitude of transmissibility reduction and compliance, seemingly modest benefits can be massively beneficial in the aggregate due to the exponential nature of the transmission process.

Also, modeling by Yale researchers and scientists found that “the benefits of each additional cloth mask worn by the public are conservatively in the $3,000-$6,000 range due to their impact in slowing the spread of the virus.”
